From the Douro Valley, Porto, to the Cape Winelands – A Cross-Continental Friendship Through Travel. In the world of private tours and personalized travel, the best connections are often forged not just with places, but with people. Over a year and a half ago, Cape Town-based tour operator Ian Renecle, founder of African Moon Adventures, was on holiday in Portugal with his partner Chantelle when they booked a guided tour through the breathtaking Douro Valley. Their guide? Hugo da Nóbrega Dias, a fellow tour operator based in Porto, who brought Portugal’s wine region to life with charm, history, and deep local knowledge. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, and that connection came full circle — this time in Cape Town, South Africa. Hugo and his partner Verena (also a professional tour guide) visited Cape Town, and Ian was thrilled to return the favour. Together, the two couples explored the Swartland Wine Route, one of the Western Cape’s best-kept secrets, known for its independent winemakers, warm hospitality, and rugged beauty. They sipped Chenin Blanc among the vines, shared stories from both hemispheres, and continued a friendship that began with a shared appreciation for storytelling and terroir. Though Verena wasn’t feeling her best that day, the spirit of connection — and great wine — remained strong. As Ian later shared: “We met Hugo during a Douro wine tour while travelling through Portugal. We connected over our mutual love for local travel experiences, and I said, ‘One day, you’ll visit Cape Town, and I’ll show you our wine country.’ A year later, here we are — Swartland wines in our hands and friends from two continents.” This isn’t just a story about tour operators reuniting. It’s about how meaningful travel experiences can create lasting global friendships, built around shared values, mutual respect, and a deep love for local culture. Private Day Tour from Cape Town to Babylonstoren and Franschhoek African Moon Adventures had the absolute pleasure of guiding a lovely client from Singapore through one of our all-time favourite escapes from Cape Town: the magnificent Babylonstroren Gardens and visiting the stunning Franschhoek Valley, just a scenic 90-minute drive away the bustling City of Cape Town. We kicked off the day at the world-renowned Babylonstoren – an 8-acre masterpiece of gardens that feels like stepping into a living painting. Ian shared a delightful gem with his client: how to instantly recognise Cabernet Sauvignon vines by their leaves, which have two little “eyes” and a “mouth” that make them look like tiny theatrical masks. She will never look at a vine the same way again! From there we moved on to the historic and elegant La Motte wine estate for a relaxed wine tasting among the oaks, tasting some of their award-winning reds and whites. Lunch followed at the fabulous Arkeste restaurant – beautifully plated, farm-fresh dishes that were almost too pretty to eat (almost!). The afternoon was spent strolling past pristine white-gabled Cape Dutch farmhouses, popping into galleries showcasing sculptures and contemporary South African art - every corner of this quaint village feels like a postcard. My client decided to do some shopping along Main Street, and came back full of smiles, shopping bags and apparently took loads of pics! Ready to treat yourself to rolling vineyards, world-class wines, and a generous dose of beauty and history? Book your private Franschhoek day tour today and let us show you why this valley keeps stealing hearts. → Full itinerary & easy online booking : https://www.africanmoonadventures.com/tour/wine-tasting-cape-dutch-farm-and-art-day-tour-from-cape-town We still have excellent availability for the 2025/2026 summer season – come join us! #Franschhoek #CapeWinelands #Babylonstoren #LaMotteWineEstate #CapeTownTours #WineTastingSouthAfrica #LuxuryDayTours #CapeDutchArchitecture #SouthAfricanArt #GardenLovers #FoodieTravel #AfricanMoonAdventures
